About Christian Vandehaar
I am a pastel artist from Altoona, Iowa. Currently I am starting to hold solo shows now that I have enough art pieces but have participated in local group shows/competitions in the last few years. I have received Best of Show at the Iowa State Fair in 2009. I received Best of Show of Emerging Iowa Artists at the nationally prestigious Des Moines Arts Festival in 2011.
My pastel drawings concern small family farms and the relationships among family members as well as the farm. Most drawings have an art history reference and a biblical reference. My goal is to evoke an emotion or memory by those who are connected to agriculture, whether it be by directly living on one or knowing a family member who did. I use composition, color, and contrast to pull out the emotion of the subject or message.
I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts at Iowa State University in 2009 and my Masters of Arts in Teaching at Drake University in 2010. Currently I just finished my first year of teaching high school art at Bondurant-Farrar at Bondurant, Iowa. I love teaching, and I love seeing people enjoy the drawings I produce. Both my art and teaching careers have taken off faster than I ever expected. I hope you enjoy the artwork.
